Types of Disinfection Cabinet

Disinfection cabinets use ultraviolet (UV), far infrared, high temperature, and ozone technology to sterilize and disinfect items and devices. Some types of disinfection cabinets include:

UV sanitizing cabinets with HEPA filtration
These cabinets can reduce the presence of viruses and microorganisms, such as COVID-19, using UV-C and HEPA filtration. They can also sterilize and dry PPE like face masks, hard hats, and safety glasses.

UV sterilizer cabinets
These cabinets can be desktop, wall mounted, or chair mounted. Some UV sterilizer cabinets have features like a magnet door, stainless steel container, and metal shelf. Others have LED time showers that allow for different work modes, such as 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Importance of UV Disinfection Cabinets

Ultraviolet Disinfection technology is the most effective and widely used method to remove bacteria, germs, microbes, and viruses. This technique is efficient enough to kill germs by utilizing the device named UV disinfection cabinet which is simple and easy to use. Many organizations or companies can use this germ-free or sterile device to keep their workplaces and employees safe from these bacteria and microorganisms. This device is proved to be very helpful in destroying these harmful microorganisms, especially the novel coronavirus. The primary objective of this device is to provide 100% steadfast and germ-free results. Ultraviolet Disinfection Cabinet is specifically manufactured to kill bacteria or microbes without any heat compulsion or biochemical substances.

Ultraviolet disinfection cabinet can also be used in many companies, organizations, and industries to prevent their offices, workers, resources, and clients from being infected from infectious diseases.

UV Light for Transfer Disinfection: Is There Any Point?

One of the choices to be made when purchasing a biosafety cabinet or transfer hatch is whether to add the additional feature of an ultraviolet light as an additional step to aid the process of microbial kill (in addition to liquid chemical disinfection). Does this add any value?

Ultraviolet light is typically provided by mercury-vapor based lamps and it needs to be within the UV-C range (a window of 220 to 280 nm, with 262 nm being the peak germicidal wavelength) and with sufficient energy, in order to be effective at killing vegetative cells (1).

There are, however, other factors that determine whether UV-C is likely to be effective at achieving microbial kill.
Before we look at that, let's consider how UV-C kills bacteria.

UV-C effects
UV light at appropriate wavelengths causes adjacent thymine molecules (pyrimidine bases) on DNA to dimerize; if a sufficient number of these defects accumulate within a microorganism's DNA, its replication is inhibited which means that the organism's enzyme-mediated repair processes no longer functions, thereby rendering microorganisms harmless (even though the organism may not be killed outright).

Challenge of bacterial spores
Killing vegetative cells is one thing; killing spores is more complex. Dormant spores of Bacillus species are 5 to 50 times more resistant to UV-C radiation than are corresponding vegetative cells. This is because the DNA in the dormant spores has a different UV photochemistry than does the DNA in the growing cell.

The elevated spore UV-C resistance is due to:

  • The photochemistry of DNA within spores, based on the relative lethality of a photoproduct called spore photoproduct (SP; 5-thyminyl-5,6-dihydrothymine).
  • The efficiency of photoproduct formation.
  • The efficiency of DNA repair in relation to the photoproducts during spore germination.

What influences UV-C effectiveness?
Whether UV-C is effect within a biosafety cabinet or transfer hatch is dependent upon a series of factors. These include:

  • The length of time a microorganism is exposed to UV.
  • The homogeneity of the UV light matters.
  • Power fluctuations of the UV source that impact the wavelength.
  • The low penetration capacity of UV for materials with a high absorption coefficient.
  • The presence of particles or shaded areas that can protect the micro-organisms from UV.
  • The specific microorganism's ability to withstand UV during exposure.

The efficacy of UV surface treatment is further influenced by surface topography. Crevices, and similar features, of dimensions comparable to the size of microorganisms (that is of a few microns) may shield microorganisms from potentially lethal UV rays and enable them to survive.
Kill can be enhanced with:

  • Increasing the treatment temperature from 25 to 60 °C.
  • Subjecting spores to prior UV exposure in order to sensitize them to subsequent heat / UV treatments.

Experimental research
How effective is UV surface disinfection as an application for pharmaceuticals and healthcare? The literature is decidedly mixed.

  • One study considered the contamination rates on working surfaces disinfected with UV light irradiation for 15 minutes and subsequently with 70% ethanol and compared with those disinfected using only 70% ethanol. The results showed that the numbers of contaminated plates with bacterial and fungal colonies after disinfection with 70% ethanol alone were not significantly different from those after disinfection with UV light plus 70% ethanol .
  • Another study challenged actively growing Bacillus cereus and B. anthracis vegetative cells or spores across exposure times ranging from 15 minutes to 2 hours with varying inoculums ranging from 10^3 to 10^9 colony-forming unit per sample. This showed that ceiling-mounted UV lamps were effective in reducing the viability of both B. cereus and B. anthracis vegetative cells and spores after an exposure time of 1 hour at an intensity of 8 uW/cm2 .
  • The efficacy was supported a study that showed UV from germicidal lamps in biosafety cabinets and pass-boxes is sporicidal for fully exposed pores on hard surfaces (15 minutes at ≥ 3.8 W/m2). However, the effect was readily nullified by the slightest obstacle to direct ex.

How the Ozone Disinfection Cabinet Works!

Ozone disinfection cabinet is a common disinfection equipment that uses ozone gas to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi in the space, and plays the role of disinfection and deodorization. Its working principle mainly includes the generation, release and disinfection process of ozone.

The generation of ozone is achieved through an ozone generator. A high-voltage electric field is generated inside the ozone generator, which decomposes oxygen molecules (O2) into oxygen atoms (O) and combines with other oxygen molecules to form ozone (O3). These ozone molecules are released into the air through the ozone generator output port.

The ozone gas in the ozone disinfection cabinet will quickly diffuse throughout the space, react with bacteria, viruses and fungi, destroy their cell membrane structure and biological activity, leading to their inactivation or death. Guangzhou Dahuan Ozone Equipment Co., Ltd. introduced that ozone's high oxidizing ability can inactivate various types of microorganisms, and has a strong oxidative and decomposition effect on odor molecules, which can remove odors.

During the disinfection process, ozone will gradually decompose into oxygen (O2) and will not remain in the space. The disinfected air will not contain harmful gases, and there is no need to worry about residual ozone causing harm to the human body.

Ozone disinfection cabinet is suitable for medical institutions, laboratories, food processing enterprises, hotels and restaurants, etc. It can effectively kill bacteria, viruses and fungi and provide a clean and hygienic working environment. However, it should be noted that ozone is very harmful to humans and animals. When using it, you should ensure that no people or animals are in the use area, and ventilate after disinfection to ensure that the air is clean and harmless.

In general, the ozone disinfection cabinet realizes the functions of space disinfection and deodorization through the generation and release of ozone gas. It can effectively kill various microorganisms and remove odors. It is a safe and efficient disinfection equipment. When used correctly, it can help us create a clean and hygienic living and working environment.

Ozone Disinfection Cabinet - Why Your Business Needs One

What is Ozone?
Ozone is a natural molecule that also has a great oxidizing property. It is considered one of the fastest and most effective microbiocidal agets and can act on a wide range of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores – These are the main microorganisms that we find in nature, that can affect the health of human beings and to a large extent, are also responsible for bad odours.

The way an ozone cabinet operates is very simple.

  • Once you have filled the cabinet with the garments you wish to disinfect, you should proceed to close/lock the door. The cabinet is then filled with ozone, which is generated by ceramic plates and/or UV lamps (depending on the type of cabinet) and concentrated inside – The cabinet generates ozone with a concentration of up to 7ppm.
  • Depending on the time selected, the ozonation time will increase – the minimum complete cycle required is 10 minutes
  • The final phase of the cycle is the ozone destruction phase, which involves destroying the ozone to a level that is not harmful to the user. Afterwhich, the door can then be unlocked and the contents of the cabinet can be removed.

How effective is ozone cleaning?
Ozone is a very powerful sanitising agent, it instantly eliminates all types of bacteria, viruses and bad smells present in clothing.

Key benefits include:

  • Ozone is currently the fastest and most efficient natural disinfectant known.
  • Ozone acts as a Bactericide (bacteria), Virulicide (virus), Fungicide (fungi) Sporicide (spores), as well as a disinfectant and deodorant.
  • Ozone deodorizes and disinfects the air or water, without leaving harmful residues, providing slight oxygenation of the treated medium.
  • Ozone does not mask bad odours, it DESTROYS them
  • Ozone is produced in In-Situ, so it does not need storage, and this reduces costs.
  • Fast, effective and easy-to-apply treatment.
  • It is not incompatible with other cleaning systems.
  • It is a cleaning system without replacement.
  • Ecological and it respects the environment

Which industries should apply this technology?
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the healthcare sector (e.g. UK care homes, hospitals, GP surgeries, and waiting rooms) relied heavily on ozone cabinets in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading. However, several other industries can benefit from the use of ozone cabinets:

Theatre and costume hire companies can sanitise and remove odours from returned clothing, allowing items that may otherwise have been disposed of to be resold.
Ozone cabinets are fantastic additions to industries (e.g. Fire and Rescue Services) where there is a need to regularly combat strong, overpowering odours such as smoke.
There is a long list of reasons why ozone cabinets are regularly found within hotels and restaurants, including the need to thoroughly sanitise domestic items such as bedspreads, pillows and chef uniforms.
Dry cleaners – This may seem like an obvious one, but we just wanted to point out that ozone cabinets are also perfect for suits or delicate clothing items that cannot be washed in water, dry-cleaned or ironed.
Once again, with a new perspective being given to the world regarding sanitising, the presence of an ozone cabinet has become commonplace in the gym laundry room.

FAQ

Q: What is a disinfection system?

A: Water disinfection systems utilize chemical methods to attack and eliminate germs (fungi, bacteria), and viruses. The process of these systems differ from antiseptic kinds that disallow the spread of microbiological substances through various means, other than completely destroying them.

Q: How does an UV cabinet work?

A: UVGI primarily inactivates microbes by damaging their genetic material, thereby inhibiting their capacity to carry out vital functions. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge tube floods the inside of a biosafety cabinet with shortwave UV light when not in use, killing microbes on irradiated surfaces.

Q: Are UV cabinets safe?

A: The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) does not recommend UV light use in BSCs. The National Institute of Health (NIH) does not permit the installation of UV lamps in Class II Biological Safety Cabinets.

Q: What can you put in a UV cabinet?

A: The Sterilizer Cabinet helps to destroy and kill a wide range of microbes on non-porous surfaces such as scissors, tweezers, nippers, combs. The unit also provides an optimum sterilizing environment for storage of sterilized implements. Ideal users include nail salon, hair salon, tattoo shop, spa, restaurant.

Q: How do you clean UV cabinets?

A: Cabinets are best cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent. Water at temperatures above 60°C can cause damage to the Cabinets. The cabinet should be thoroughly rinsed with warm water or distilled water to prevent buildup of residues but care should be taken not to damage the light unit and bulbs.

Q: Does a UV cabinet Sterilise?

A: UV Disinfection cabinets are simple to use and ensure sterile equipment. They are manufactured to the highest standards to ensure reliable, sterile results. Our uv cabinets are used to kill bacteria without a requirement for heat or chemicals.

Q: What is the difference between UV cabinet and autoclave?

A: An autoclave uses heat and pressurized steam to sterilize materials, while a UV sterilizer uses UV light. Autoclaves are commonly used in medical and laboratory settings, while UV sterilizers are often used for air, water, and surface sterilization.

Q: What is the definition of UV cabinet?

A: UV Cabinet works by the process of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation. It is a disinfection method that uses UV-C, the shortest wavelength having 254nm. UVC light produces electromagnetic energy that can kill microorganisms e.g., bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.

Q: What is the UV range in a biosafety cabinet?

A: Biological Safety Cabinets are equipped with germicidal ultraviolet light (UV) lamps that radiate light at a wavelength of 254 nm (UV-C band) to decontaminate the interior surface.

Q: What is the UV intensity of a biosafety cabinet?

A: UV germicidal lamps for biosafety cabinets are generally required for irradiation intensity. The specific requirement is that the measurement data by the UVC meter reaches 100 μw/cm 2.

Q: Can UV lamps be used to sterilise biosafety cabinets?

A: For these reasons and other concerns, the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) does not recommend the use of UV lights in BSCs. Retrofitting any equipment (e.g., UV lights) into a cabinet may alter the air flow characteristics, invalidate the manufacturer warranty, and is not recommended.

Q: How does an ozone cabinet work?

A: In the first phase of the cycle, the items to be disinfected are placed inside the ozone cabinet and the door is locked. At this point the time is selected and the cabinet begins to generate ozone through a Corona system that works with ceramic plates (ozone is generated with a concentration of up to 7ppm.).

Q: What is the use of disinfection cabinet?

A: Designed to dries, sterilizes , preserves and dehumidifies tableware, towers, cloths, cosmetic and hairdressing utensils, stationary, medical instruments and Items regularly handled by patients and other items which can fit in the cabinet!
